Candidate Statement-To State Employees Retirement System Members:
I ask for your vote to be a member of the Board of the Pension Reserves Investment Management Board (PRIM), representing the Massachusetts State Employees’ Retirement System (MSERS). I am an Associate Professor of Economics and Public Policy at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, an attorney, and a member of the Massachusetts Society of Professors and the Massachusetts Teachers Association. My candidacy has been endorsed by the MTA.
How to Cast Your Vote in the PRIM Board Election
I am running for this Board seat because I will work to ensure that our public pension plan supports our long-term retirement security, and invests in the interest of all plan members and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I am a nationally-recognized expert in pension funds and financial institutions, and much of my research has focused on how public pension plans can be managed for the benefit of all beneficiaries and in the public interest. I have expertise on the growing unregulated ‘private’ financial markets, including private equity and private credit funds, and have studied the impact of these financial firms on public pension fund assets. I believe I will be able to make a positive contribution at PRIM to ensure that the interests of all state employees in the system are truly represented.
In addition, I am a third-generation member of our retirement system. My grandmother was a librarian at Boston Trade High School; my mother retired recently as a guidance counselor at Whately Elementary School; and my sister is a guidance counselor in the Springfield public schools. I was born in Worcester, grew up in Amherst, and my extended family on both sides is in the Boston area. I am proud to be a public educator in Massachusetts and look forward to bringing my skills and commitment to public service to the PRIM Board.
